At Aardvark Bathrooms, our work has always been about more than tiles, fixtures, and fittings. It’s about people — their homes, their comfort, and their dignity. That belief is at the heart of Aardvark Giving Back, our initiative dedicated to supporting families in our community who are facing hardship and need essential home improvements.

This month, we’ve had the privilege of completing a fully funded bathroom renovation for an extraordinary local family. Their story is one of courage, resilience, and love — and it’s one we feel honoured to share.

Meet Teddy: A Boy Who Has Faced More Than Most Adults Ever Will

Teddy is an incredible 11‑year‑old boy with a bright smile and a brave spirit. Born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS), he underwent open‑heart surgery at just a few days old. At six weeks, he suffered a cardiac arrest that caused long‑term kidney damage. As he grew, he developed a limb‑length discrepancy and now uses a prosthetic leg, something that causes him significant pain and means he relies on a wheelchair.

Across his young life, Teddy has spent almost six months at Great Ormond Street Hospital and has undergone numerous surgeries. Yet despite everything, he remains confident, funny, and full of life. He loves video games, football, and spending time with his friends — the things every child should be able to enjoy.

His sisters, Kahlen and Emmie, have grown up with a maturity far beyond their years.

Their parents, Claire and Alex, have navigated years of uncertainty, hospital stays, and emotional strain with unwavering love. They’ve created a home filled with warmth, humour, and resilience — even when life has been far from easy.

Designing a Bathroom That Truly Meets Their Needs

When we first visited the family home, it was clear that their existing bathroom layout simply wasn’t working for them anymore. The space was outdated, impractical, and didn’t support Teddy’s mobility needs or the family’s daily routines.

Our goal was simple: create a bathroom that gives Teddy more independence, while also giving the whole family a space to relax and breathe.

To achieve this, we redesigned the layout from the ground up:

  • A walk‑in shower and wet‑room area was introduced, giving Teddy a safe, open space with level access.

  • A built‑in shower seat was added to allow him to wash independently and comfortably, reducing strain and giving him more control over his daily routine.

  • The bath was kept intentionally, not removed — because for this family, it’s more than a fixture. It’s a place to unwind, to reset, and to enjoy moments of calm together after long, demanding days.

  • The entire room was reconfigured to maximise space, improve flow, and ensure that every element — from grab rails to storage — supports both accessibility and comfort.

The result is a bathroom that feels modern, calming, and functional, but most importantly, one that truly works for Teddy and his family.

Why This Renovation Matters

For Teddy, a safe and accessible bathroom isn’t a luxury — it’s essential. Daily tasks that many of us take for granted can be painful, exhausting, or even unsafe for him. A well‑designed space can support his independence, reduce strain, and give him dignity and comfort.

But this renovation isn’t just for Teddy. It’s for his whole family.

A calming, functional bathroom becomes a sanctuary — a place to breathe, reset, and simply be together without the constant pressure of medical challenges. It’s a space that brings ease into a home that has weathered so much.

Keep your eyes peeled for the reveal...
