Transforming a Family Home: Teddy’s Accessible Bathroom Renovation Through Aardvark Giving Back

This month, we had the privilege of completing a full bathroom renovation for a Hemel Hempstead family after they were selected for Aardvark Giving Back — our new community initiative created to support households facing hardship and in need of essential home improvements.
From the very beginning, this project was about more than tiles, fixtures, or layouts. It was about giving a family some much‑needed support, dignity, and comfort during a time when life has demanded extraordinary strength from them.
Teddy’s Story: A Journey Marked by Courage
The renovation was awarded to the family of 11‑year‑old Teddy, a boy whose medical journey has shaped much of his young life. Teddy was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) and underwent open‑heart surgery as a newborn.
At just six weeks old, he suffered a cardiac arrest that resulted in long‑term kidney damage. As he grew, he developed a limb‑length discrepancy and now uses a prosthetic leg, relying heavily on a wheelchair due to pain and mobility challenges.
Despite spending almost six months in Great Ormond Street Hospital and facing more surgeries than any child should, Teddy remains confident, funny, and full of life. His resilience is remarkable and during the renovation, he became part of our team.
Every morning he greeted us with a smile, ready for his “site manager” briefing, making sure we stayed on track and occasionally questioning Sam’s snack breaks. His presence reminded us daily why this initiative matters.
Understanding the Family’s Needs
When we visited the family home earlier this year, it became clear that their existing bathroom layout was no longer suitable. The space didn’t support Teddy’s mobility or independence, and it placed additional strain on the whole family. They needed a bathroom that worked for everyone — a space that offered safety, accessibility, and moments of calm in a home that has weathered so much.
We knew this renovation had to be thoughtful, sensitive, and designed with genuine care.

The new space includes:
A level‑access wet room with built‑in seating to support Teddy’s independence
A reconfigured layout to maximise space and ease movement
A retained bath for family use, ensuring comfort and routine remain intact
A dedicated vanity area for Teddy’s sisters, giving them a space that feels truly theirs
Every detail was chosen with empathy — not just to improve the room, but to improve daily life.

“When I launched Aardvark Giving Back, it came from a genuine desire to make a difference in the town I grew up in, but I didn’t truly realise the impact it would have.
Being welcomed into this family’s life and trusted with their home was a privilege. Creating a space that helps Teddy gain independence, while also giving his sisters and parents some much‑needed breathing room, is something I’ll never forget.
Seeing Teddy every day was one of the highlights of the project. He quickly became my site manager, insisting on a full run‑through each morning. Teddy’s strength, humour, and determination inspired every part of this transformation. His family’s resilience reminded us why community matters. And this project reaffirmed exactly why we started Aardvark Giving Back.
